History

They were the dregs of society, the scum. An amazing gathering, born of war, misfortune and contempt. War, misfortune and contempt united them and threw them ashore, as a river that rises in high water throws black pieces of wood polished by water and stones onto the reaches.

... Zerrit woke up amid smoke, fire and blood in a ruined castle, between the corpses of relatives and parents. Wandering through the courtyard strewn with the dead, he came across Feer , a soldier from the corps of punishers, whom the King Rhobar II sent to pacify the riots.

Feer was one of those who captured and destroyed the castle after two days of siege. Having captured the castle, the companions abandoned Feer, although Feer was still alive.

At first, Zerrit thought to finish off Feer, but he did not want to wander alone. And Feer, like Zerrit, was sixteen years old. They licked their wounds together. Together they killed and robbed a tax collector, drank beer together in a tavern.

Caezar deserted from the army. At the same time, Caezar probably did not really understand where the recruiters dragged him. He was completely drunk at the time. Having sobered up and received a reprimand from the sergeant during the drill, he ran away. At first he wandered alone, but when the Orcs defeated the rebel confederation, the forests became crowded with deserters and fugitives. The fugitives quickly formed gangs. Caezar stuck to one of them. Caezar, Feer, and Zerrit didn't have to look for each other for a long time. There were too many things that made them stand out in the crowd. They had too much in common behind them. They were united by their love of loud, colorful, fancy clothes, stolen trinkets, swords, which they did not take off even while dancing. They were distinguished by audacity and arrogance, self-confidence, bullying and rudeness. Contempt and neglect. Only force was recognized. Dexterity in the possession of weapons, which they quickly acquired on the roads. Determination.

And friends. Comrades. Because a lonely person must die – from hunger, from a sword, from an arrow, from an Orc's club, from a rope and a fire. The lonely one is dying – stabbed, beaten, desecrated, raped, tossed from hand to hand like a toy.

A lot of people were chasing them. A lot of people tried to kill them and grind them into powder. Nothing could prevent the bloody thirst of this trio...

... So, their gang was called "The Scavengers." One day some peasant called them that and they liked it and the nickname was accepted by the rest of the fugitives. The gang consisted of the three young men and 2 girls, whom Zerrit and Feer brought along. One was called Gill and the other was called Nyx

...They were a rag-tag bunch. Some had been soldiers, some were deserters. But they all shared the same hatred, contempt and anger towards the people. Other such gangs came across quickly, and mostly of the same type. Often they were caught selling stolen goods. But the scavengers didn't care. They didn't care about gold, jewelry. They slaughtered entire villages, had fun, and they took all the loot to other villages and distributed it to passers-by. They didn't care about the law, they didn't care about the war.

They didn't care about anything except for themselves and their gang. They were like the river that carries away everything – wood, stones, rubbish, and corpses.

Part 2 : The quiet before the sandstorm

It was getting dark. A gentle warm breeze warmed the entire body from the heels to the top. The smell of roasted meat and felled wood was scattered throughout the area. The fires could be seen all the way to Trelis. Their owners probably tried to hide them so as not to attract the attention of prying eyes, but they were not very successful. Three silhouettes were walking along the road. They walked carefully, silently walking along the sandy road. They walked quietly, but in a hurry.

-The air is just like on Feshir, don’t you agree? - said one of the travelers, the largest among the three in appearance. Long-haired, with an attractive but angry face. Had a tattoo around his arm of a green serpent with an open mouth and a purple forked tongue. He was wearing a black leather jacket embroidered with silver. -It would be more similar if there was a smell of sulfur and feces everywhere, but yes, it’s the same. - Answered the second traveler. His dark hair was pulled back into a neat ponytail. On his hands he wore black leather gloves with studs, which he took off only when he went to bed. -You are trivial to the point of disgrace. - Exhaling, the third, slightly hoarse, gentle voice of the third traveler added. It was also slightly muffled by the large hood. The voice was not a man's.

The road continued ahead of them. Sometimes the wind painfully knocked grains of sand into the travelers’ faces, but they did not pay attention to it and continued on their way. After a few minutes of walking, the guy with the ponytail said: -Caesar, how far are your friends? -They said that they should be in the “lower camp at the transition to Varant.” And we... -And we haven’t even reached Nemora yet. - The hoarse voice finished. -Do you think they will let us through this Nemora? -As far as I heard, this is just a hunters’ camp. -You know everything about everything. - Caesar said with a hint of irony. She quickly beat out a rhythm with her heels. The drum repeated, and the lute and pipe were picked up. The pipe and lute entered, making it more complicated, calling on Nyx to change her pace and rhythm. Nyx, bright and light as a butterfly, easily adjusted and danced. The hunters began to clap their hands.

-Zerrit! – Nyx shouted, squinting her eyes elongated with flashy makeup. - You're clever with a sword! What about dancing? Will you support?

Zerrit threw Caesar's hand off his shoulder, untied the scarf from his neck, and took off his beret and jacket. In one jump she was on the table next to Nyx. The hunters shouted encouragement, the drum and bassetla hummed, and the pipes sang moaningly.

-Come on, musicians! – Nyx screamed. - All the way! And quickly!

With her hands on her hips and her hair sharply thrown back, the girl kicked her legs, danced, and kicked out a fast, rhythmic staccato with her heels. Zerrit, captured by the rhythm, repeated her movements. The girl laughed, jumped, changed her rhythm. Both danced synchronously, one a mirror image of the other. The hunters shouted and cheered. Lutes and violins soared in high singing, tearing to shreds the measured hum of bassets and the groan of pipes.

They danced, straightened up like reeds, touching each other with their elbows resting on their hips. The heels beat out a rhythm, the table shook and hummed, dust swirled in the light of tallow candles and torches.

-Faster! – Nyx urged the musicians. - Well, life! Life!

It was no longer music, it was madness!

-Dance, Zerrit! Forget everything! Forget about everything. About everyone!

The table is shaking, the crowd is shaking, everything is shaking, all of Nemora is dancing, dancing, dancing... The crowd is screaming. Caesar yells, claps, everyone claps and stomps, Nemora trembles, the earth trembles, the world trembles! World? What world? There is no peace, there is nothing, there is only dancing, dancing... Nyx's elbow... Fever, fever... The violins, pipes are just whinnying, the drummer is just raising and lowering the sticks, he is no longer needed, THEY are beating the beat . Nyx and Zerrit, their heels, so the table hums and sways, all of Nemora hums and sways... Rhythm, rhythm. The rhythm is in them, the music is in them, the music is themselves! Nyx's dark hair dances over her forehead and across her shoulders. The strings of the Lutes burst with feverish, fiery singing, soaring to the very heights. Blood beats in my temples.

Frenzy! Oblivion!

Violins and pipes end the melody with a sharp, high chord, Nyx and Zerrit end the dance with the simultaneous drumming of their heels, without lifting their elbows from each other. They both breathe, inflamed, wet, suddenly press one another, hug, shower each other with sweat, heat and happiness. The camp explodes with a single cry and is filled with thunderous applause.

-Zerrit, you devil! – Nyx breathes heavily. “When we get tired of robberies, we should go out into the world to earn a living by dancing...

Zerrit is also breathing heavily, unevenly. Can't say a word. He just laughs convulsively.

Suddenly a cry is heard in the crowd and a commotion ensues. Caesar pushes the mighty hunter hard. The hunter pushes Caesar. They grapple, raised fists flash. He jumps up again, and a dagger flashes in the light of the torches.

-No! Stop! – Nyx screams shrilly. - No fights. It's a night of dancing!

The girl takes Zerrit by the hand, and both jump to the floor. -Musicians, play! Who can't wait to show off their skills? Come with us! Well, who dared?

-Musicians! More life!

Nemora trembles with a scream, vibrates with rhythm and melody.

Zerrit is dancing.

It was quite warm in the cave, even though it was raining heavily outside. A small fire was the only thing that illuminated the cave and helped to see what was inside: Many vines climbing down the walls. Large crystals reflecting light from the fire. Nyx and Zerrit sitting next to the fire, and Caesar sitting a little further at the exit, listening to the sounds of the rain. The corpses of a couple of crawlers who apparently settled here recently.

Nyx said:

-So, let's see... - Nyx looked at the map - Going from here to Mora sul will take 2-3 days at best. Let's go around the mountain from the west and go to Brago... then from there to the south and go straight to Mora Sul. It will be faster.

Zerrit looked at the map for a while and nodded.

-We'll leave tomorrow morning, when Caesar has sobered up a little.

-Agreed.

-Do you have everything ready?

-Yes, I am ready.

They ate, warmed themselves, and prepared to sleep.

The girl took out some warg furs from her bag and began to lay them on the stone floor.

-I'm surprised you had time to pick up furs on the way.

-Oh, these are the ones I got back at the beginning of our acquaintance. I thought they'd be useful.

-Well, you were right.

She went to the entrance and looked out. It was still raining, and the rain was only getting stronger.

She went to the fire and settled down, wrapping herself in warm cloak.

Zerrit, too, lay down near the fire, and closed his eyes.
